For the past five decades, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has supported young and diverse filmmakers by providing fellowships to students seeking careers in film and television. Their grant-giving work has fostered creative expression by providing more than 1,500 scholarships to entertainment–related nonprofit organizations, academic programs and humanitarian efforts. 
These funds help ease financial burdens so that filmmakers can focus on creating art that has the potential to change the world. One of the academic programs to benefit from the HFPA’s support is the LACC Cinema & Television Department program at Los Angeles Community College. Spearheaded by Cinema and TV department chair Jen Vaughn, the program aims to provide students with technical skills to prepare them for professions in the entertainment industry.
Recently, the HFPA presented the 76th Golden Globe Awards in Beverly Hills to celebrate excellency in filmmaking with some of the biggest names in Hollywood. Amongst the crowd of Hollywood film and television elite were LACC film students Christy Oldham, Chellee Ray and Jacob Cipiano who received an internship to work behind the scenes at the show to help create a live television broadcast that reached 18.6 million viewers.
Oldhams’ work previously won top honors at the 3rd annual LACC Cinema & TV Awards for Best TV Production-Long Form for her post-apocalyptic web series Vape Warz (streaming on Amazon Video Direct). Ray is an entrepreneur who launched a digital subscription platform called SelfSubmitU that aims to provide job submission assistance for actors.
LACC offers a comprehensive, low-cost, hands-on training program that guides students of all levels through basic and advanced courses in single and multiple camera film and video production. The programs Associate Professors of Cinema are industry veterans and include Michele Gendelman (film and TV writing), Christopher Rossiter (cinematography) and Dylan Shields (editing and film business aspects).
