Italian energy company eni has confirmed the discovery of a large gas field off Egypt’s northern coast. Eni estimated that the gas field is about 100 square kilometers and has the potential of holding 20-40 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. Eni’s CEOClaudio Descalzi says the gas field has the potential to be the largest gas field ever in the Mediterranean and possibly the world, once confirmation has been made. This natural gas discovery could be a game changer for Egypt as it will satisfy Egypt’s natural gas demand for decades. Eni has had a presence through it’s subsidiary IEOC Production B.V. since 1954 and CEOClaudio Descalzi recently traveled to Egypt to discuss the successful discovery with Egypt’s President, Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and Prime Minister, Ibrahim Mahlab.
